Packaging a Bike for Delivery
Following the steps below will help ensure that your bike is properly packaged and protected for safe shipment to its destination.
- Gather the Equipment: Collect all the necessary packaging materials, including a sturdy box, bubble wrap, foam pipe insulation, cable ties, packaging chips, packing tape, a pedal spanner, a spanner or socket and ratchet, and an Allen key.
- Remove the Pedals: Use a pedal spanner to unscrew the pedals. Remember that the left pedal spindle is often reversely threaded, so turn clockwise to remove it when facing the crank arm.
- Remove the Saddle: Loosen the quick-release lever or use a spanner to detach the saddle. Pull the saddle upwards, and wiggle it if necessary.
- Remove the Front Wheel: Use a quick-release mechanism or a spanner to remove the front wheel. Ensure it is detached from the bike.
- Protect the Rear Wheel: Wrap bubble wrap or similar material around the rear wheel axle to prevent it from poking through the box and damaging the thread.
- Protect the Frame: Use foam pipe insulation or bubble wrap to safeguard the bike frame and forks from scratches during transit.
- Turn the Handlebars: Loosen the stem slightly with an Allen key and rotate the handlebars so that they align with the frame of the bike.
- Prevent Movement: Secure the loose rear wheel to the frame using cable ties to prevent it from moving around inside the box. Fix the loose handlebars to the frame as well.
- Fill the Voids: Use polystyrene or recycled packaging chips to fill any empty spaces in the box. This prevents scratches caused by loose objects during transit.
- Seal the Box: Employ ‘the H seal’ by taping down the centre of the box and then across each of the smaller ends. Ensure the box is securely sealed.
- Add Handholds: Use a sharp knife to carefully cut handholds on the box, making it easier to carry and move.
